It's like he puts you in a time machine, and boom, you're back in the 1150s. It's creepy and dripping with unease. If you like medieval horror, you have to give this a read. # Happy Hour I am a massive fan of the Killer VHS series. It's like *Goosebumps*, but for adults! And this one doesn't disappoint. Told across split timelines, it's a story of love and revenge that starts with a bang and never lets up. # Needlemouth This one was trippy and poetic, but not in a way I enjoyed. It just wasn't my thing, but if you like literary horror about demons, you might vibe with it. A very cool take on generational trauma. # Nightjars This one was excellent. An Appalachian take on vampires and how the sins of the father are passed on to the son. Wehunt's got the sauce, folks. # Our Lady of Holy Slaughter Another piece of historical fiction that takes place in the 1100s. This one follows a group of crusaders as they get turned around in a swamp and see a figure they mistake for the Holy Mother. As is often the case, the real horror comes from people, not the supernatural. If you like medieval horror, grab this alongside Coy Hall's *Devilry in Godling Wood*. # Roll for Initiative A short and vicious extreme horror novella. A woman joins a TTRPG group in a new town and is immediately creeped on. When the group breaks into her house to assault her, she fights back and slaughters them all. Very cathartic to see gross dudes get what they have coming to them. # Tatratea Alex Woodroe has dropped two novellas in the last year that I loved. The general vibe here is that it's the 2080s, some cosmic-horror mind bug is taking over people's brains, and a small group of individuals is trying to find the source so they can destroy it. Might this be commentary on AI? Maybe a more general statement about brainrot? Who's to know! Check it out. # Faceless Killers I love Nordic noir. *Faceless Killers* is a study in how blunt Scandinavian communication can still make for an entertaining novel. A lot of interesting thoughts in here about xenophobia and rural towns modernizing. Funny how fears from '90s Sweden can hit home in 2026 USA. # Sober Curious I don't have much to say here, other than if you are one of the many folks exploring your relationship with alcohol, this is a good read. The only way to change your drinking habits is to change your drinking habits. # Letters to a Young Poet This one is not pictured above because I can only put nine images in the image above. I read this a few times a year because it has great life advice in it, along with great advice for creatives. Most of that is because I watched old stuff again. *Event Horizon*, *The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo*, *Thirteen Ghosts*, etc. I didn't want to bore you all by chatting about movies I have seen 100 times. So, here are the movies I saw for the first time in August. # Evil Dead Burn Mean. That's the best way to describe this entry in the *Evil Dead* franchise. I liked it, but I have also been in a splatterpunk/extreme horror mood recently. Not my favorite entry, but I do think it's worth watching. # Motor City They don't talk in this thing, like, at all. And you know what? It fucking works. I was locked in from the opening. Gritty revenge flick with excellent performances from Alan Ritchson, Shailene Woodley, Pablo Schreiber, Ben Foster, Ben McKenzie (get those crypto bros, my man), and Lionel Boyce. Stacked movie. # Now You See Me 3 You get what you expect here. They introduce us to a new group of magicians, and they globe-trot to steal a diamond from a wonderfully evil Rosamund Pike. # Rumble Through the Dark I was in the mood for some Southern noir, and this hit the spot. It's actually quite sad what has happened with Aaron Eckhart's career because he does a fantastic job playing a bare-knuckle boxer who is suffering from memory loss due to his profession. There's crime and stuff, and we get a cage fight in the rain to bring the whole thing home. I just finished Season 4\. Can we talk about how funny Chris's intervention was? Top 5 TV moment, for sure. # Cape Fear Reviews on this adaptation are mixed, but I fall on the side of it being more good than bad. It ran a little long, and the "is it supernatural or not" thing got tired. But otherwise, it brought me back to a particular time in the '90s when thrillers like this helped shape my taste in media. Javier Bardem is a treat. # Lanterns They kind of nailed it with this so far. It's grounded enough that it works as a cop thriller, but cosmic enough to be true to the source material. ACAB and all that, but I am enjoying this. Kyle Chandler and Aaron Pierre are pitch-perfect. I did, however, play some video games in August! # Forgive Me Father This game was made for me. It's a Lovecraftian boomer shooter that looks like you're playing inside a comic book. 10/10, no notes. Some of the most fun I've had with a video game in a while. # College Football 27 I'm a huge college football fan. In preparation for the upcoming season, I played way too much of the video game. # Balatro Finally got around to playing it. I see the hype. Simple yet addictive. # MÖRK BORG I mention this not because I played it, but because I did go through the rulebook in preparation for playing. I am a big fan of OSR TTRPGs, and this is the gold standard. When I finally gave in, I understood some of the hype. Every five years, on Halloween, thirteen killers descend on a small town and fight it out to determine which of the thirteen original families of the United States gets to hold ultimate power for the next five years. The circle around the town closes in, forcing the killers together. Some killers want to win, while others just want to wreak havoc. It's like *Fortnite*, but bloodier. # Plunge I am a Joe Hill fan, so this was an easy pickup for me. Brain worms, deep-ocean shenanigans, and cosmic horror. If you haven't checked it out, I suggest it. # Red Room: The Antisocial Network I mentioned earlier that I have been in the mood for splatterpunk/extreme horror content. *Red Room* is always recommended when it comes to those subgenres in the comic book medium. Some really insane art in here depicting some horrendous things. It's all about torture rooms, so it's pretty well understood what you're getting into when you buy it. It scratched a particular itch for me. --- ## Fin That means "The End"
